Keshet Hamishalot Foundation
Keshet Hamishalot, or Chariot of Wishes, is an organization that was formed in 2012. Its purpose is to help fulfill a final “travel wish” for a terminally ill adult or child. This means taking the patient to a place that has a special meaning for him or her. This might be a place in nature, a family event or a cultural event. This “travel wish” is accomplished by using specially fitted ambulances because the terminally ill individuals are bed-ridden. Volunteer medical staff and medical clowns accompany each “travel wish”. This service is free of charge and open to people of all religions and races.
Our Values and Goals
Our goal is to take a patient out of his or her environment in order for them to visit a place that holds a special meaning before they became sick. Currently, on average, we can fulfill only one “travel wish” per week. We are a small-scale operation due to budgetary restrictions. We want to grow; double, and triple the number of “travel wishes” we are able to accommodate each week. We hope to own our own ambulances, instead of renting ambulances as we currently do. We want to build and equip our own vehicles. By fulfilling a person’s “travel wish” we are able to improve the state of mind of the terminally ill or long term-hospitalized patient. This “travel wish” has a significant positive effect on a person’s end days. The patient’s loved ones also benefit from these outings. Often a terminal patient has an increased level of mindfulness. This “travel wish” provides a special, life-affirming experience. We also aim to educate the family and the patient about this terminal illness, whatever it might be. Palliative care in Israel is a neglected subject. In comparison to other developed countries (International report from 2015) Israel ranks very low in this important type of care. Keshet Hamishalot works closely with many medical specialties, all of whom are dedicated to patient’s treatment. These include departments of oncology, hematology, gerontology, as well as people suffering from ALS, COPD, or people in hospice, or home-care hospice. The medical establishment focuses on the physical sides of the patient’s illness. Keshet Hamishalat focuses on improving a patient’s psychological well being. Providing information and education to patient and family is an integral part of our organization. Medical clowning is a significant part of our program. We aim to create an awareness of all aspects of the medical situation and the challenges faced by the terminally ill patient and his or her family. Keshet Hamishalot is staffed by volunteers. We operate on a very modest budget, with money being used to rent and operate the ambulances. We hope to maintain a tight hold on the finances of the organization. By the many people who volunteer to help our organization, we are able to maintain our expenses.
Clown-bulance is a project set up together with “The Dream-Doctors” who operates Medical Clowns in many hospital departments all over Israel. Through their work they meet on a daily basis with children and adults passing long-term treatments. Many of them have life threatening diseases. Over time Medical Clowns build up a trust-relationship and knows about the patients worries, fears and deepest wishes. Clown-bulance offers the opportunity to fulfill those wishes and create a bridge to places where fantasies come true. The whole event becomes an unforgettable experience and a huge booster to their self-confidence. Every donation that Keshet Hamishalot will receive for sponsoring a Clown-bulance wish will be matched by Dreamdoctors; 1+1, meaning double happiness!

We impact our patients by helping to improve their frame of mind. We provide an opportunity to change a person’s environment for a brief time. A trip with one’s family and loved ones is an uplifting experience. We allow and encourage a patient to orchestrate his or her wish. This gives the patient a voice with which to be heard in a stronger and more engaged manner within the hospital and within the patient’s familial relationships. This provides a sense of control, of self-fulfillment and of competence. Fulfillment of a wish brings loved ones closer together. The “travel wish” creates joyful, intimate and memorable moments at a very difficult time.
Our Future Dreams
Our dreams are two fold. We hope to own our own vehicles. These ambulances will be placed in various strategic locations within Israel. We hope to continue to have a dedicated volunteer staff that is ready to fulfill the wishes of young and old patients who are coping with terminal conditions. The staff is comprised of medical doctors, paramedicals, medical clowns and coordinating personnel. We hope to improve the state of mind of the terminal patient and his or her family. Palliative care is a critical part of our aging society. We need to educate people about end of life issues, including the medical community. WE INVITE YOU TO BE A PART OF THESE AMAZING EXPERIENCES!
